Join us at the Museum 6-9 pm for "Holiday Glow, Low and Slow", an evening of art and community. We will hear from Jaqueline Valenzuela about her art and the culture around low riders, and then create and decorate a low rider ornament. Get into the holiday spirit with finger foods, wine, and beer from one of our proud partners, Claremont Craft Ales. Explore the museum's galleries and enjoy our newest exhibition Home in Aztlán: The Garcia Collection of Chicanx Art. Museum members are invited to an Artful Evening on Sunday, December 1, 5 pm-8 pm. Ryan and Melissa Zimmerman will welcome members to celebrate the season in their renovated custom Doug Henderson Mid-Century Modern style home featuring artwork by many Claremont area artists as well as display of selected pieces from the Museum’s permanent collection. The event is sponsored by Concierge Realty Group.

FestivArts at Padua Hills

The Claremont Lewis Museum of Art will host FestivArts at the Padua Hills Theatre from 11 am to 4 pm with an art show, craft demonstrations, art activities, book sale, music, and festive foods. FestivArts, formerly known as the Art Fiesta, celebrates its 20th year with more artists showing their original artwork in the historic buildings and shady olive groves.

Revolutions & Revelations: Avant-Garde Art of the 20th Century
Thursday, October 10, 17, and 24, 2024
Join us every Thursday, 6-7 pm at the Museum for our free Fall Speaker Series. This three-part lecture series will examine key movements and individual artists who influenced the history of Post-World War II avant-garde art. Both men and women artists were essential to these developments. The connections between these decades and the earlier era (1900-1945) will be defined. Taken together these movements are foundational for contemporary art practice. Wendy Slatkin, Ph.D is an art historian specializing in 20th century art. Learn more.

Dia de los Muertos Celebration
Public Event
Bring the whole family to the Depot for a community Dia de los Muertos cultural celebration from 12 to 4 pm. Enjoy free admission to the Museum to see Phil Dike: A Bird’s-eye View. Activities on the Depot Plaza will include art-making with CLMA’s Project ARTstART, face painting offered by CHS theatre students, and a community chalk art project. At 1 pm the "De Colores" show featuring music, storytelling, puppets and art will be presented by the dA Center for the Arts. More activities will be at Shelton Park starting at 10:30 am. Learn more

Our Fall Gala, Reflections, was held on the lawn at the historic Claremont Depot, highlighting our exhibition featuring the work of Claremont artist, Phil Dike, underscoring the profound impact of the arts on our lives and community. Gallery 2 was named in Phil Dike’s honor and memory, as one of Claremont’s most prominent legacy artists and one of California’s most famous watercolorists. Click here. for more information.

Join us for the opening reception for Phil Dike: A Bird’s Eye View from 6 to 9 pm during Art Walk. An influential and innovative artist, Dike was one of the first artists in the 1930s to develop the California Style of watercolor painting and an admired teacher. Aesthetic Meditation on Nondual Being: a discussion with Charles Long & Khang Bảo Nguyễn
Join us in dialogue with Charles Long and Khang Bảo Nguyễn, featured artists in our current exhibition The Great Perfection 6 pm-7:30 pm. The program will begin with a brief meditation, followed by slideshows by the artists and discussion of the intersection of nondual philosophies and creative practice. Exhibition Curator Seth Pringle will moderate the discussion with audience participation highly encouraged. The program will be followed by light refreshments in the Baldonado Atrium.

The Great Perfection Opening Reception
Join us for the opening reception for The Great Perfection from 6 to 9 pm during Art Walk. Sculptures by Charles Long are juxtaposed with abstract paintings by Khang Bảo Nguyễn representing the artists’ diverse approaches to the aesthetic expression of nondual consciousness. “Ragas on the Veena,” a live musical performance by Kaushal Chandrasen will be 6-8 pm. Jack Rogers Hopkins Film Night
A new film "Jack Rogers Hopkins: California Design Maverick” will be screened in the Calaycay gallery of the Museum at 6 pm. The 30-minute documentary film about the Modernist sculptor will be followed by a discussion with Director Katie Nartonis and Jim Rawitsch, executive director of the Sam and Alfreda Maloof Foundation for Arts and Crafts. The event is free and open to the public.

Maloof It Off the Roof!
Come experience “Maloof It Off the Roof” at the April Art Walk from 6-7 pm. As part of the current exhibition This is not a chair., artists and furniture makers will provide a wide range of "chairs" to be dropped from the roof with musical accompaniment. The event will take place at Ahmad Shariff Art Gallery, 107 Harvard Ave. across the street from the Museum. The performance event is based on tales that as a young furniture maker Sam Maloof would drop his chairs from the roof of his garage to test the strength of their joints. “Maloof It Off the Roof” combines this unorthodox yet practical act with a dose of joyous spectacle and performative destruction to create connections between generations of artists/makers and disciplines.

An opening reception for This is not a chair. was held from 6 to 9 pm during Art Walk. The exhibition presents a broad range of artists and approaches to the icon of human creative production that is the chair. Drawing inspiration from Rene Magritte’s painting The Treachery of Images, which placed the statement “Ceci n’est pas une pipe.” (This is not a pipe.) under a painted representation of a pipe, This is not a chair. will similarly explore the gray area between object and concept, language and meaning. Enjoy some surf tunes by Powerflex 5. A member preview was held from 5 to 6 pm.

Face to Face in Conversation: Ken Gonzales-Day & Erika Hirugami
A conversation with featured artist Ken Gonzales-Day and Erika Hirugami, Founder & CEO of Curator Love, Co-Founder of the UNDOC+Collective and professor at Claremont Graduate University was held on January 18, 2024. They discussed their respective projects and the past, present, and future of cultural representation. Conversation and refreshments followed the presentation.

Padua Hills Art Fiesta

The 19th Annual Art Fiesta was held from 11 am to 4 pm with an outdoor art show, craft demonstrations, art activities for kids, book sale, film, music, and festive foods. This year featured more artists showing their unique original artwork under the shady olive trees of the Padua Hills Theatre. Fine wines and craft beers were served on the historic balcony overlooking the foothills.

The Dia de los Muertos cultural celebration was held from 12 to 4 pm. Admission to the Museum was free. Activities included face painting, chalk art and art activities with CLMA’s Project ARTstART. Performances of Folklorico and Salsa dancing, mariachi music, and a Halloween themed marionette show were presented on the Depot Plaza from 1 to 4 pm. More activities followed at Shelton Park starting at 10:30 am.

Tree Speak Exhibition Opening
Public Event
Over 200 people attended the Art Walk opening reception of Tree Speak: Interpretations of the Rustlings with visual interpretations, by artists working in the area, which ascend from the concept or image of trees and leaves in nature and a survey of Claremont’s long history as the City of Trees presented by Claremont Heritage.

Opening Celebration at the Depot

The Claremont Museum of Art welcomed the community to its new gallery space at the Depot. The opening exhibition, (re)Generation: Six Decades of Claremont Artists was on view and visitors enjoyed light refreshments and art-making activities led by Project ARTstART students.

Padua Hills Art Fiesta
The Claremont Museum of Art presented the 13th Annual Padua Hills Art Fiesta with an outdoor art show, art and craft demonstrations, music and more featuring a preview of the recently produced film Claremont Modern: The Convergence of Art + Architecture at Midcentury, and an accompanying exhibition.

Padua Hills Art Fiesta to Feature Millard Sheets Film
The Claremont Museum of Art hosted the 12th Annual Padua Hills Art Fiesta with an outdoor art show, art and craft demonstrations, music and more featuring the recently-produced film Design for Modern Living: Millard Sheets and the Claremont Art Community 1935-1975, and a special exhibition Millard Sheets: Hills and Horses.

Against the stunning backdrop of the historic Claremont Depot, guests enjoyed an evening of art and entertainment by the Jazz Doctors, accompanied by wine and great food by Spaggi’s.
