  2. This is not a chair. Opening Reception

    An opening reception for This is not a chair. was held from 6 to 9 pm during Art Walk. The exhibition presents a broad range of artists and approaches to the icon of human creative production that is the chair. Drawing inspiration from Rene Magritte’s painting The Treachery of Images, which placed the statement “Ceci n’est pas une pipe.” (This is not a pipe.) under a painted representation of a pipe, This is not a chair. will similarly explore the gray area between object and concept, language and meaning. Enjoy some surf tunes by Powerflex 5. A member preview was held from 5 to 6 pm.

  3. Face to Face in Conversation: Ken Gonzales-Day & Erika Hirugami

    A conversation with featured artist Ken Gonzales-Day and Erika Hirugami, Founder & CEO of Curator Love, Co-Founder of the UNDOC+Collective and professor at Claremont Graduate University was held on January 18, 2024. They discussed their respective projects and the past, present, and future of cultural representation. Conversation and refreshments followed the presentation.

  5. Padua Hills Art Fiesta

    Public Event

    The 19th Annual Art Fiesta was held from 11 am to 4 pm with an outdoor art show, craft demonstrations, art activities for kids, book sale, film, music, and festive foods. This year featured more artists showing their unique original artwork under the shady olive trees of the Padua Hills Theatre. Fine wines and craft beers were served on the historic balcony overlooking the foothills.

  6. Dia de los Muertos Celebration

    Public Event

    The Dia de los Muertos cultural celebration was held from 12 to 4 pm. Admission to the Museum was free. Activities included face painting, chalk art and art activities with CLMA’s Project ARTstART. Performances of Folklorico and Salsa dancing, mariachi music, and a Halloween themed marionette show were presented on the Depot Plaza from 1 to 4 pm. More activities followed at Shelton Park starting at 10:30 am.

    CLMA’s Project ARTstART invites everyone to a Youth Arts Festival on Saturday, May 6 and Sunday, May 7 from 12 to 4 pm. This free family friendly event will feature ARTStation interactive art workshops, our annual StART It Up! exhibition of elementary student art projects, and Anthem of the Teenage Artist, an exhibition of work from Claremont High School’s IB Studio Art class.

  12. A Conversation About Trees: Art, Wood, and Sustainability

    A special program will be held at the Museum on Saturday, April 1 at 4:30 p.m. Presented in collaboration with Sustainable Claremont, a discussion panel will use Vince Skelly's sculpture exhibition as a launching point to talk about the epic windstorm of January 2022, eco-friendly art-making and arboreal memory. Panelists will include artist Vince Skelly, Sustainable Claremont Director Stuart Wood, and artist/Pomona College Professor Michael O'Malley.

    The Claremont Lewis Museum of Art will host the 18th Annual Padua Hills Art Fiesta on Sunday, November 6. Visitors can shop for unique original artwork by 30 local artists; watch a film and browse through art books; enjoy art activities, craft demonstrations, music and festive foods on the terrace overlooking the foothills. NEW THIS YEAR: Guests can sip wine and craft beer on the historic balcony or stroll through the shady olive groves.

    Author Adam Arenson will speak about his newly published book Banking on Beauty: Millard Sheets and Midcentury Commercial Architecture in California. Expansively researched and illustrated, this lively history recounts how the extraordinary partnership of financier Howard Ahmanson and artist Millard Sheets produced outstanding mid-century modern architecture and art for Home Savings and Loan and other commercial clients.

    Former Los Angeles Times Art Writer Suzanne Muchnic and Mary Fuller Roberts will share personal stories and insights into the life and work of artists Aldo Casanova and James Fuller. These two men, with very different personalities and artistic styles, shared a great friendship as faculty members at Scripps College. They were both inspired by nature and displayed that in their artistic expressions.
